Mauricio Pochettino says “The whole thing is very strange.”

Former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris-Saint Germain & current United States football team coach Mauricio Pochettino shows criticism towards the entire ordeal of Manchester City FC & their 114 charges.

The Argentine used to be the manager for Tottenham Hotspurs between the 2014-15 season, up till the 19-20 Premier League season.

During his days as a manager in the Premier League the, Mauricio Pochettino faced the Manchester giants on numerous occasions.

He has managed a team playing against Manchester City in 23 different matches, out of which he only managed to win 6, draw 5 & lose 12 matches.

In the pre-match conference for the game between USA & Chile, Mauricio Pochettino did not hold back at all, furthermore, when asked about his opinion on the various charges against Manchester City.Mauricio Pochettino has won the Ligue 1 with PSG in the 2021-22 season.

Citing his opinions, Mauricio Pochettino compared the various charges with the difference in bias of the operations of City & his former club Tottenham Hotspurs.

He said, “What is the punishment? Nottingham Forest, Everton… not in same situations, different cases, but where rules were broken they were punished with point deductions, financial sanctions and so on. It’s very difficult”.

“It’s the astonishment you feel when a ruling comes out citing 114 rule violations. How did this happen? The most important thing is how things are set right… because it is not just about who committed the violations, who broke the rules… but what about the controls? Where were the controls, I keep asking!”

He called for greater scrutiny of the regulatory framework. The Argentine was appalled by the blatant cheating that City were allowed.

“At Tottenham we had to comply with strict rules the Premier League imposed on us— how could those controls have been so strict with us and so much less strict with some others?”

“That’s why I say the whole thing is very strange. And that’s the problem: everything becomes very, very murky, and it’s very, very difficult to draw a conclusion”.

He questioned the consistency of the Premier League’s regulatory oversight, highlighting concerns over differing levels of scrutiny and suggesting that such disparities have contributed to uncertainty surrounding the matter.

“If it’s true that they broke 114 rules so we have lived through a period of deceit. No type of punishment will make it possible to repair what was done, and the Premier League’s controls are severely damaged”.

“It’s a very sad situation… because what was already achieved and celebrated maybe was not real, and what wasn’t so good could have been better”.

Calls for concern

He expressed concern that the alleged breaches could undermine confidence in the integrity of past achievements and expose significant weaknesses in the Premier League’s regulatory oversight.

“We have lived through a period where sporting justice did not exist. If the charges are proven, it’s very difficult to repair what happened. I hope that at least it serves to ensure equality exists in the future”.
“How do you repair that? We wait and see”.

He expressed concern that the alleged breaches could undermine confidence in the integrity of the Premier League itself.

Pochettino’s position is informed by his view that Tottenham may have been adversely affected by City’s regulatory breaches.

The former Tottenham manager had also been linked with a potential return to the club.

However, following Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment, he opted to extend his commitment abroad rather than return to north London.
