Serena Williams was added to the US Open entry list on Wednesday alongside fellow former champion Novak Djokovic, who is unable to compete due to his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Williams has been added to the entry list for the Grand Slam in New York, which will take place from August 29 to September 11. She will be participating in events in Toronto and Cincinnati before that.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion fell in the first round at Wimbledon and last appeared at the US Open in 2020 when the six-time winner reached the semi-finals.
Djokovic, who retained his Wimbledon title last month, is a supporter of Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic will not be able to participate in the year’s final Grand Slam because current rules require travellers to be fully vaccinated before entering the United States.
Eligible players will automatically enter the main draw, but that won’t help Djokovic, who retained the Wimbledon title last month and is Rafael Nadal’s 22nd Grand Slam title.
Djokovic will not be able to play in his final Grand Slam of the year due to current rules that require travelers seeking to enter the United States to be fully vaccinated and certified before boarding.
The USTA says that it does not have a vaccination mandate in place for players, but it will respect the US government’s position regarding travel into the country for unvaccinated non-U.S. citizens.
