Daniil Medvedev’s hopes of successfully defending his championship at the U.S. Open were dashed on Sunday by Nick Kyrgios, who defeated him 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals and guarantee a new player will hold the top spot after the competition.

The most important moments of the game were won by the furious Australian, who displayed a newfound focus and fitness in a confrontation between two of the biggest servers and most explosive personalities in the game.

“I still can’t believe the boneheaded play I made over here,” Kyrgios said.

“I thought that was legal to be honest. That’s going to be everywhere on SportsCenter so I’m going to look like an idiot but that’s alright.”

The 27-year-old Wimbledon finalist is in the finest shape of his tennis career and has won the most matches since the French Open’s conclusion.

“I’m just trying to work hard every day, try to make every practice session count, getting to sleep,” he said.

“I would have probably been out every night before but now I’ve got a great girlfriend. She helps me, and my team.”

When they play on Tuesday, the 23rd-seeded Kyrgios will be a huge favourite to defeat the 27th-seeded Karen Khachanov.
