Here’s what you need to know about the opening ceremony for the World Cup, which will take place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18:
WHAT TIME WILL THE OPENING CEREMONY BE HELD?
The World Cup’s opening ceremony will take place on November 20, before the first Group A match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
The opening ceremony will begin at 7:30 pm IST.
The original plan was for the opening ceremony to occur before Qatar’s first game on November 21, creating the unusual situation of two games taking place before it. The first match was then moved up by a day.
Ecuadorean President Guillermo Lasso has announced that he will not attend his country’s high-profile opener against Qatar, citing domestic unrest.
WHERE WILL THE OFFICIAL OPENING BE HELD?
The opening ceremony will take place at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium, which is located 40 kilometres north of Doha.
The Al Bayt Stadium, named and designed after the tents used by Gulf nomads, is the farthest venue from central Doha, but it is also one of the largest and has a retractable roof.
Dua Lipa, a British singer, has denied reports that she will perform at the ceremony.
Singer Rod Stewart told The New York Times that he turned down a “over $1 million” offer to perform in Qatar.
