Serbia’s Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will take part in next year’s Australian Open after being granted a visa.
“I was very happy to receive the news yesterday,” the 35-year-old Serb, who was sent home from Australia on the eve of last year’s event after a row about his COVID-19 vaccination status, said after his victory over Andrey Rublev at the ATP Finals on Wednesday.
Djokovic is a nine-time Australian Open champion at Melbourne Park. Before being denied entry into this year’s Australian Open, Djokovic had won the first Grand Slam of the season three years in a row.
Djokovic will undoubtedly be determined to win a record 10th Australian Open title now that he has returned to Australia.
Djokovic has been speaking positively about Australia throughout the year, saying several times that this year’s negative experience can’t compare to all of the positive memories he has had in Australia throughout his career.
It remains to be seen whether Djokovic will return to Australia triumphantly in January.
