The players listed below have been ruled out or are questionable for the World Cup, which runs from November 20 to December 18.
PAUL POGBA (FRANCE)
Pogba injured his knee during the preseason and had surgery in September to repair a torn meniscus.
The 29-year-old returned to training, but his agent announced on Oct. 31 that he would not play for Juventus or the world champions before the World Cup.
KANTE N’GOLO (FRANCE)
Chelsea midfielder Pedro suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury that has limited him to just two league appearances this season. Following surgery, he will be out for four months.
TIMO WERNER (GERMANY)
The 26-year-old RB Leipzig forward suffered an ankle injury in their 4-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in early November and will miss the rest of the season.
JAMES REECE (ENGLAND)
The 22-year-old right back injured his knee in Chelsea’s Champions League match against AC Milan in October and has stated that he will not play for England.
JOTA, DIOGO (PORTUGAL)
The Liverpool forward will miss the tournament due to a calf injury sustained in the Premier League club’s victory over Manchester City, but manager Juergen Klopp has stated that he will not require surgery.
PEDRO NETO (PORTUGAL)
The 22-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers winger will undergo surgery on an ankle injury sustained against West Ham United in October.
BOUBACAR KAMARA (FRANCE)
In September, the Aston Villa midfielder suffered a knee ligament injury that will keep him out until after the World Cup.
ARTHUR MELO (BRAZIL)
In the build-up to a Champions League match against Rangers in October, Liverpool’s on-loan midfielder suffered a muscle injury.
KENNEDY, SCOTT (CANADA)
The 25-year-old defender suffered a freak shoulder injury while playing for SSV Jahn Regensburg in Germany’s second division at the end of October.
GIOVANI LO CELSO (ARGENTINA)
While playing for Villarreal, the midfielder suffered a hamstring injury. When naming his squad, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni described him as “irreplaceable.”
MARCO REUS (GERMANY)
The captain of Borussia Dortmund suffered an ankle injury and did not recover fully in time. Reus also missed the 2014 World Cup after suffering an injury on the eve of Germany’s departure for Brazil, where they won the championship.
BEN CHILWELLÂ (ENGLAND)
Ben Chilwell suffered a hamstring injury during added time in Chelsea’s Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb and later revealed that he had suffered “significant damage” that would rule him out of the World Cup.
PRESNEL KIMPEMBE (FRANCE)
The Paris Saint-Germain centre back has ruled himself out due to a hamstring injury.
YUTA NAKAYAMA (JAPAN)
After being ruled out for the rest of the season due to an Achilles injury, the defender will miss the World Cup.
HARIT, AMINE (MOROCCO)
Amine Harit of Morocco’s Olympique de Marseille suffered a knee injury during a Ligue 1 match against AS Monaco, ruling him out of the tournament.
SADIO MANE (SENEGAL)
Despite being named to Senegal’s World Cup squad despite suffering an injury while playing for Bayern Munich, Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the tournament after officials confirmed he would require surgery on the injury.
CHRISTOPHER NKUNKU (FRANCE)
The RB Leipzig forward was named to France’s World Cup squad.
