Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal shrugged off his bitter split with Manchester United to set yet another record, becoming the first player to score in five World Cups with a penalty in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday.

Apart from a couple of Ronaldo chances, the first half of the Group H clash was forgettable, but it came alive after the break as Portugal finally kicked off their campaign.

Ronaldo scored a dubious penalty in the 65th minute after an innocuous collide with Mohammed Salisu prompted the referee to point to the spot.

Ghana did nothing but defend deeply in the first half, but Andre Ayew equalised in the 73rd minute, giving their noisy bank of fans at the 974 Stadium something to cheer about.

Five minutes later, Joao Felix restored Portugal’s lead, and Ronaldo then showed his class with a jinking run before sliding a pass to Rafael Leao, leaving Ghana stunned.

Portugal survived nine minutes of stoppage time to win their opening game of a World Cup for the first time in their last four appearances, thanks to Osman Bukari’s 89th-minute headed response.
