Adidas, a major player in the sports apparel industry, claimed that Argentina’s bold purple away jersey at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will also carry a strong message about gender equality.
For the first time in their history, the two-time winners will don a shirt that is vivid purple and features blazing motifs that were inspired by the Sun of May on their national flag.
The shirt, a break from the nation’s customary navy blue and black away shirts, was modelled by captain Lionel Messi after it was formally introduced on Monday. It drew a lot of positive feedback online.
“The new away shirt of the national side transmits a powerful message of gender equality, aligned with the values of diversity and inclusion that our brand promotes,” said general manager of Adidas Argentina, said in a statement.
“Through sport we have the opportunity to change people’s lives, and soccer is one of the ideal tools to transform reality.”
Adidas noted that the clothing was created using a yarn that contained 50% Parley Ocean Plastic, reinvented plastic garbage that was discovered on islands, beaches, coastal towns, and shorelines and kept from entering the oceans.
Beginning on Nov. 20, the World Cup will feature Argentina in Group C along with Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Poland.
