The Netherlands won 4-0 in Gelsenkirchen in 1974, and the two most recent meetings Frankfurt in 2006 and Sao Paulo in 2014—did not result in a goal. This will be the sixth World Cup match between the two nations.
Argentina
Argentina won its first World Cup in 1978, defeating the Netherlands in the final 3-1 after extra time, thanks to two goals from Mario Kempes. Argentina also won the World Cup in 1986, while the Netherlands finished second three times, in 1974, 1978, and 2010.
Lionel Messi has nine goals in 23 World Cup matches spanning five editions (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022), trailing only Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s leading scorer in the tournament.
Netherlands
The Netherlands have gone 19 matches unbeaten since being eliminated from the European Championship last year, while Argentina have recovered from a defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match in Qatar, which ended their streak of 36 internationals without defeat.
The Netherlands has lost two previous World Cup penalty shootouts, to Brazil in 1998 and Argentina in 2014. Their only win came against Costa Rica in 2014.
