In the second test on Thursday, a depleted Australian attack defeated South Africa by an innings and 182 runs, sealing the series with one test remaining after the visitors’ batting troubles were once again rudely exposed.
The Proteas were bowled out for 204 before tea on day four of the match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, needing 386 runs to force Australia to bat again after the hosts declared on a massive 575 for eight.

The victory, Australia’s fourth in as many tests during the domestic summer, secured first place in the World Test Championship and further demonstrated their dominance of the format.
“That’s really sweet, super proud of how we kind of ‘gutsed’ it out at times,” captain Pat Cummins said at the post-match presentation.
“For Starcy to come out with a pretty big injury (and) bowl like he did… really, really proud of this team.”
South Africa’s illustrious record in Australia, where they had won the previous three test series, was in flames on Thursday.
Their loss in Brisbane in 1931 by an innings and 163 runs was their previous worst performance in Australia.
