English cyclist Matt Walls was involved in a horror crash at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday when he was catapulted over the barriers and into the crowds at the Lee Valley VeloPark.
The Olympic omnium winner needed treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance while competing in the men’s scratch qualifiers at the London venue.
After Walls and his bike crossed the top of the barriers on the steep banking of a curve, spectators also sustained injuries.

Team England said in an update: “Matt is alert and talking — as he has been throughout — and is being given medical attention in hospital.”
According to witnesses, the banking’s incline prevented anyone in the front row from seeing the collision.
A young girl also received medical care while a man who had injuries on his arm received treatment.
Walls had been attempting to avoid crashing riders. The injured duo of Josh Duffy from Australia and George Jackson from New Zealand slid up the banks, forcing Walls up onto the barrier and eventually over it.
Derek Gee, a Canadian, also surfed the top of the barrier but avoided falling into the crowd behind Walls.
The Canadian Mathias Guillemette was disqualified for triggering the original collision, while Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man was also sent to the hospital with head and shoulder injuries.
