U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu is confident she will be fit to play at Wimbledon subsequent to being compelled to pull out from the following week’s WTA 250 event in Birmingham because of a side strain.
A “freak injury” constrained Raducanu, 19, to exit from her initial match at the Nottingham Open on Tuesday yet the Briton said on Wednesday she was anticipating the remainder of the grasscourt season.
“It was disappointing to go out this week with a side injury and unfortunately will no longer be able to play in Birmingham,” Raducanu said in a statement.
“I`m looking forward to be back on the match court soon though to enjoy the rest of the grass season.” the statement added.
Raducanu shot to fame in September, 2021 when she won the U.S. Open title as a qualifier, turning into Britain’s first female Grand Slam champion since Virginia Wade in 1977.
She has experienced some fitness issues since coming out on top for her maiden Grand Slam championship and was taken out in the second round of the French Open a month ago. Wimbledon will be held from June 27 to July 10. Raducanu arrived at the last 16 at the grasscourt major in 2021.
