The inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on Monday in Mumbai saw 87 players picked up by the five franchisees, out of which 30 were overseas players.

India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was the first player to come up in the auction and was the most expensive pick of the day at INR 3.4 crore (USD 415,000 approx) by the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

After losing Smriti to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians ensured that they do not lose another opportunity of getting a captain and bought India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at INR 1.8 CR (USD 220,000 approx).

Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner and England vice-captain Nat Sciver-Brunt were the most expensive overseas buys at INR 3.2 crore (USD 390,000 approx) each. While Ashleigh went with the Gujarat Giants, Nat Sciver was picked by the Mumbai Indians franchise.

India off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma was the second-most expensive Indian pick at INR 2.6 crore (USD 317,000 approx). The 25-year-old from Uttar Pradesh will now play for her home state team UP Warriorz.

Jemimah Rodrigues was picked by the Delhi Capitals at INR 2.2 CR (USD 268,000 approx) and was the third-most expensive Indian pick at the auction.

Australia wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney and India opener Shafali Verma were bought at INR 2 CR (USD 244,000 approx) each. While Mooney was taken by the Gujarat Giants, Shafali was picked by the Delhi Capitals franchise.

Mumbai Indians then bought India pacer Pooja Vastrakar while Royal Challengers Bangalore took India wicket-keeper and power hitter Richa Ghosh at INR 1.9 CR (USD 232,000 approx) each.

England left-arm spinner and current No.1 T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone was picked by the UP Warriorz at INR 1.8 CR (USD 220,000 approx) after interest shown by both Gujarat and Delhi.

Tara Norris from the USA was the only player from the associate nations to get picked and was bought by Delhi at INR 10 lakhs. Gujarat initially looked interested in Mahika Gaur of UAE but it turned out that they had already exhausted their overseas slots.

Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry will join Smriti in the Royal Challengers Bangalore after getting picked at INR 1.7 CR (USD 207,000 approx).
