The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been asked by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to include wrestling and shooting in the 2026 Games in Victoria, Australia.
After shooting was removed from the schedule for the Birmingham Games in England, India threatened to skip the event and had to be persuaded otherwise. The event starts on Thursday.
At the 2018 Gold Coast Games, where they also topped the medal tally in wrestling, shooting contributed 16 of India’s 66 medals.
The IOA acting chief Anil Khanna and treasurer Anandeshwar Panday met with CGF chief Louise Martin in Birmingham on Tuesday to insist that both sports be added to the enlarged list of disciplines because none is among the initial 16 listed for the Victoria Games.
“On behalf of the IOA, Mr Khanna and Mr Panday requested the CGF President that wrestling and shooting be included in the final sports programme,” the IOA said in a statement.
The Indian Olympic Association has additionally requested that the national federations for wrestling and shooting speak with their respective international governing organisations to advocate for their participation in the 2026 Games.
