Iran scored twice in the final seconds of extra time to defeat 10-man Wales 2-0 in their World Cup Group B match on Friday.
Iran won a famous match thanks to goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian, moving them into second place in the group behind England, who face the United States later in the day.
Wales, who had keeper Wayne Hennessey sent off late in the game, appeared to have survived the Iranian onslaught in their Group B match at Al Rayyan’s Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, until substitute Rouzbeh Cheshmi scored and Ramin Rezaeian sealed the win with seconds remaining.
Iran had come out fighting in the second half, with Sardar Azmoun’s shot rebounding to Ali Gholizadeh, whose follow-up cannoned off the upright and back to the waiting Azmoun, who headed tamely into keeper Hennessey’s hands.
Iran’s World Cup squad, which has been distracted by a domestic political crisis, came close again on 72 minutes when Hennessey got a fingertip on Saeid Ezatolahi’s shot, then piled on.
