Rafael Nadal gave no indications of torment as the 13-time French Open champion walked into the second round at Roland Garros with clinical 6-2 6-2 6-2 win against Jordan Thompson.
The Spaniard, who had shown up unprepared this year after a rib injury and a constant foot issue hampered the development to his dearest Grand Slam tournament, was calm on a cold court Philippe Chatrier.
“It’s incredible for me to play here again on Chatrier. I’m happy with this win. First round is always special. It is a good start, of course, straight sets. That’s it. I mean, I played good for a while,” said Nadal.
“Then things that I could do better and I need to do better. But it is a positive start, and that gives me a chance to have one more day on practice tomorrow and then another chance the day after tomorrow.”
The 35-year-old, who has a record 21 men’s Grand Slam titles to his name, made light of the possibilities adding to his count however his presentation was suggestive of those of earlier years.
