Beginning on Monday at the U.S. Open, Serena Williams will compete in what is probably the last event of her farewell tour. She will headline the opening night and face Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.
Williams will play in front of more than 23,000 raucous spectators on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where she has won six of her 23 Grand Slam titles and three weeks ago announced her impending retirement from tennis.
Despite not being in the best of shape, Williams, 40, will attempt to dominate Kovinic in their first career meeting by using her signature combination of strong serves and groundstrokes.
Emotions will be running high for Williams in the final Grand Slam of 2022 because she missed the U.S. Open last year due to a leg injury and only returned to singles play at Wimbledon in June.
“I definitely will be very emotional. How am I not gonna cry?” – said Williams.
“Maybe if I hopefully can get through a couple of matches, then maybe I’ll feel better but I think initially it’s going to be hard because every time I step out there, it’s literally my last time.”
