After losing to South African Michaela Whitebooi in the women’s 48kg final on Monday at the Commonwealth Games in this city, Indian judoka L Shushila Devi retired with a silver medal.
Shushila struggled in a close match before losing the championship via “Waza-Ari” in 4.25 minutes.
The Indian won a second silver medal at the competition. She had also placed second at the 2014 Glasgow Games.
Earlier, Shushila had guaranteed the nation a medal by overcoming Priscilla Morand of Mauritius to go to the final.
Manipur’s 27-year-old competitor defeated South Africa’s Michaela Whitebooi for the gold medal by using a “Ippon” to defeat Morand.
Ippon is a manoeuvre in which a competitor violently throws his opponent to the ground.
A sub-inspector with Manipur Police, Shushila had progressed to the quarterfinals with a win over Harriet Bonface of Malawi earlier in the day.
