Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa pacer Sisanda Magala as a replacement for New Zealand bowler Kyle Jamieson, who has been ruled out due to an injury, for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

28-year-old Jamieson was ruled out of the upcoming edition of the IPL due to a recurrence of a lower back stress fracture which he suffered just before the recently concluded Test series against England. He was bought by the CSK for INR 1 Crore price at the mini-auction held in December last year.

On the other hand, Magala went unsold at the auction. The upcoming edition will be his first season of the tournament as he has never previously played in the IPL. 32-year-old Magala joins CSK at his base price of INR 50 lakh.

Magala has rich experience in the shortest format of the game. Though he has played just 4 T20Is for South Africa, Magala has a reputation of being a regular wicket-taker in domestic T20 games over the years.

He impressed everyone with his excellent wicket-taking ability while representing Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who were the eventual champions, in the inaugural edition of the SA20. Magala finished the tournament as the join-fifth highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets at an economy of 8.68.

CSK will play their first game of the season in the opening fixture of IPL 2023 against the defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

However, it is yet to be seen whether Magala will be available for the first game for CSK as South African players involved in their upcoming ODI series against the Netherlands will arrive late at the IPL.
