India were thrashed 0-8 by the powerful USA in their debut encounter of the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup on Tuesday in a lopsided Group A clash.
The Indian team was played by a significantly more technically better USA team, which was 4-0 up by the half-hour mark and 5-0 up at half-time.
The United States scored three more goals in the second session to inflict the Indians a humiliating defeat in front of a sizable home crowd at Kalinga Stadium.
Melina Rebimbas scored twice (9th and 31st minutes), while Charlotte Kohler (15th), Onyeka Gamero (23rd), Gisele Thompson (39th), Ella Emri (51st), Taylor Suarez (59th), and captain Mia Bhuta (62nd) also scored.
Thomas Dennerby, India’s head coach, had stated before the match that his team would be difficult to score against, having prepared hard since February, but his players were absolutely confused and lost the plot on the day. The country’s first match in a women’s world cup was a disaster.
India, who qualified for the age-group showpiece because they were the hosts, were easily defeated by the United States, who finished second in the inaugural edition in 2008 but has not competed since.
Riley Jackson’s hard work on the right channel saw him move past a couple of Indians before producing a great cross for Rebimbas to knock into the net in the ninth minute.
Charlotte Kohler outjumped her Indian opponents six minutes later to score the USA’s second goal with a strong header.
In the 23rd minute, Gamero punished the Indians for a defensive breakdown, and Rebimbas scored her second goal of the day with a left-footed effort from the edge of the box.
Thompson came on in the 39th minute to make it 5-0 and hush the home supporters.
