Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 9 wickets on Monday in Match 20 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
A collective performance from the bowlers helped DC lay the platform and restrict Mumbai Indians to 109/8. The DC top order then came out all guns blazing and chased the target down in just nine overs to go to the top of the table.
Marizanne Kapp (2/13), Shikha Pandey (2/21) and Jess Jonassen (2/25) all chipped in with two wickets each for DC. Shafali Verma(33 off 15) and Capsey (38 off 17) then went berserk to finish off the chase early.
Chasing 110, Meg Lanning got going straightaway with two consecutive well-placed fours off Nat Sciver-Brunt in the first over. Shafali Verma then joined the party as she took the attack to Issy Wong and hit her for three fours.
The pair hit five more fours to bring up 50 in just the fourth over. Harmanpreet Kaur then introduced Hayley Matthews into the attack. Shafali smacked the first ball for six but a ball later, Matthews bounced back to have Shafali stumped with a flighted one.
DC raced to 67/1 at the end of the Powerplay. Alice Capsey then joined the party as she hammered three sixes off Matthews and garnered 22 runs off the over. The English batter then took on Saika Ishaque, hitting her for two sixes and a four as Meg Lanning hit the winning runs in the same over to seal the chase with 9 wickets and 11 overs to spare.
As a result of the win, DC leapfrogged MI to go top of the table.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning won the toss and elected to bowl. They went unchanged while MI made one change as Pooja Vastrakar replaced Dhara Gujjar.
Delhi Capitals got off to a brilliant start as they reduced Mumbai Indian to 21/4 inside the first seven overs. After a tight first two overs, Marizanne Kapp struck twice as she had Taniya Bhatia caught behind for 1 and then cleaned up Nat Sciver-Brunt off the very next ball in the third over. Jemimah Rodrigues then pulled off a brilliant catch at mid-on to send back Hayley Matthews, off Shikha Pandey and then Arundhati Reddy joined the wicket-taking party as she had Amelia Kerr caught behind for 8.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Pooja Vastrakar then released the pressure valve as they hit 18 runs in the Poonam Yadav over. Kaur swept one powerfully for four and Vastrakar lofted a couple for a four and a six respectively.
Vastrakar then took on Shikha Pandey and hit two fours to bring up MI’s fifty in the 11th over.
Lanning then brought Jess Jonassen back into the attack and it worked as she had the dangerous-looking Vastrakar caught at long on for 26 (19) to break the fifth-wicket stand of 37-runs off 29 balls between Harmanpreet and Vastrakar.
After two quiet overs, Harmanpreet tried to up the ante but Shikha Pandey got the better of her as she had her caught at deep mid-wicket after being hit for a four the previous ball. It was a huge wicket for DC.
Amanjot Kaur (19 off 16) and Issy Wong (23 off 24) then stemmed the rut and added 30 runs off 27 balls to take MI past 100. MI eventually ended up posting 109/8 on the board.
Marizanne Kapp was named the Player of the Match for her brilliant figures of 2/13 from four overs.
