Twenty teams from across the country will compete in the Durand Cup this year. Eleven Indian Super League sides will be participating.
The tournament will begin at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on August 16. Last year, 16 teams took part in the 134-year-old tournament. For the first time in its history, Assam will host 10 group matches scheduled from August 17 to September 4, Chief Minister Himantha Biswa Sarma, who presented the three Duran Cup trophies in the presence of senior officials from the Indian Army, the organizer of the tournament, said.
The three trophies are the Durand Cup (a challenge trophy and original prize), the Shimla Trophy (a challenge trophy first awarded by the people of Shimla in 1904) and the President’s Cup (for permanent storage and first presented by India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad). in 1956) currently touring five cities.
“The cooperation from the Assam government has been phenomenal and we are confident that this will herald a new beginning for the game in the state,” said Lt Gen K K Repswal.
He said that the 131st edition of the Durand Cup is getting bigger and better, with 20-top teams from across the country participating. This year, all 11 teams from the ISL are taking part.
“The matches in Guwahati will be held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic stadium in the city. I thank the Chief Minister for taking time out to encourage us in this effort at promoting and spreading the love for the game of football further in the state,” Repswal added.
The trip to the three trophies will be flagged by Kolkata on July 19th, after a two-day stay in Guwahati before proceeding to his first host, Infar. After that, Rajasthan will participate in Jaipur for the first time.
Team up to make a final stop at defending champion FC Goa’s home and return to Kolkata on July 31st. The final will also be played in Kolkata on September 18.
