In their Champions League Group C match on Tuesday, Bayern Munich defeated Barcelona 2-0 thanks to two quick goals from Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane.

Robert Lewandowski, a striker for Barcelona who left Munich after eight years in the summer, had a miserable welcome back to Munich as the Germans are currently in first place in their group with six points after two games.

After three straight draws in the Bundesliga, Bayern’s victory could not have come at a better time.

“Barca had the better chances in the first half. We had to rely on Manuel. After the break, we were more aggressive. We quickly scored two goals. We basically won because of higher efficiency,” Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

“From our side I am also happy Lewandowski did not score against us tonight,” Nagelsmann added.

Barcelona and Inter each have three points. The bottom-place team is Viktoria Plzen.

With constant pressure, Barca boxed the Germans in their own half and created several early scoring opportunities.

Four minutes later, the Pole, who has 344 goals for Bayern in 375 appearances, nearly scored once more, headed on to Neuer from close range.

“We made six or seven big goal chances but missed them and Bayern took their opportunity,” Barcelona coach Xavi said. “We competed, we played very well and had we scored it would have been a completely different match.

“This is the Champions League though, you need to compete and you try to avoid the marking error at the corner which let them go 1-0 up.”

Barcelona take on Czech side Plzen in the Champions League on October 4.
