Manchester United’s Europa League campaign got back on track with a 2-0 victory over Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday, thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In Group F, Feyenoord registered their first points emphatically, crushing Sturm Graz 6-0, while Lazio were thrashed 5-1 away to Danish side Midtjylland.

AS Roma scored three goals in the second half to defeat 10-man HJK Helsinki 3-0 in Group C, with Andrea Belotti scoring his first Roma goal to seal the victory.

Olympiakos’ chances of progressing from Group G look slim after they were defeated 3-0 by Bundesliga side Freiburg, who moved to the top of the table thanks to Michael Gregoritsch’s brace.

United’s Premier League resurgence was halted last week by a lacklustre home defeat to Real Sociedad, but they responded with a businesslike win in Chisinau, where the match was played due to security concerns.

Sancho, who had been unexpectedly left out of England’s squad earlier in the day, scored United’s first goal in the 17th minute after receiving a pass from Christian Eriksen.

Ronaldo, who had been on the bench for the first few weeks of the Premier League season, scored his 699th club goal in the 39th minute after being given a start by manager Erik ten Hag.

Sheriff, who defeated Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Champions League last season, posed an occasional threat, but United were unfazed on their first trip to Moldova.

Sancho said it was “unfortunate” not to be selected for England’s Nations League games, but said: “I have to just keep focussing on myself and keep on working hard, week in and week out, that’s what I’ll do.”
