In preparation for the T20 World Cup final, England and Pakistan’s coaches will be studying weather forecasts as well as game plans because a bleak outlook could jeopardise the match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Due to a persistent La Nina weather phenomenon that has been soaking much of eastern Australia for several years, heavy rain is predicted for both the matchday on Sunday and the reserve day on Monday.

Several Super 12 matches have already been cancelled during the tournament, but the semi-final matches in Sydney and Adelaide went on as scheduled.

Although the weather may reduce the number of spectators at the MCG, organisers will proceed with the scheduled start time of 7 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Sunday in the hopes that each side can complete the minimum number of 10 overs necessary for the final.

If the game must be postponed, it will begin at 3 p.m. (0400 GMT) on Monday, with players and officials warned to be ready to play well into the night if necessary.

Forecasts frequently miss the mark because Melbourne is known for having “four seasons in one day,” especially in the spring.

“Today there was a great chance of rain and here we are. The wicket looks excellent… Who knows the weather here in Melbourne?” Hayden said.

“On the day, I’m sure that Melbourne is going to open up enough to have a 10-over match.”
