England defeated Pakistan to win the Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday, becoming the sport’s first dual white-ball champions, holding both the 50-over and 20-over titles.
Jos Buttler’s side restricted Pakistan to 137-8 in front of a partisan crowd of 80,462 at the raucous Melbourne Cricket Ground before Stokes’ unbeaten 52 guided them to a five-wicket victory with six balls remaining.
Thirty years after losing to Pakistan in the 50-over World Cup final at the MCG, England turned the tables on the south Asians with brilliant death bowling and Stokes finishing on 52 not out in a 138-run victory chase.
After winning the 50-over World Cup on home soil in 2019, England became the first country to hold both global white ball titles.
Stokes also batted unbeaten in the 2019 World Cup final victory over New Zealand.
All-rounder Sam Curran was named player-of-the-match after finishing with miserly figures of 3-12 as Pakistan collapsed late to finish on 137 for eight after England captain Jos Buttler sent them in to bat.
He was also named tournament player of the year for his consistent brilliance in death bowling.
“Very special but I don’t think I should be getting this, I think the way Stokesy played there — to get a 50 in the final, he does it so many times for us,” said Curran.
