Alexia Putellas of Spain won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the second year in a row, defeating England’s European Championship winner Beth Mead and Australia’s Sam Kerr.

Putellas, who was crowned FIFA Best Women’s Player earlier this year, led the Champions League with 11 goals last season and scored 18 in the Primera Division.

However, the 28-year-old missed Spain’s Euros after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury on the eve of the tournament in England.

“Without my teammates this would not have been possible,” Putellas said after receiving the award. “I want to thank the staff and the coach and everyone involved at Barcelona.

“I’m very happy to be back here and pleased because a year ago I was able to win this prize and it pushed me to want to be even better.”

Putellas lead Barcelona to a third consecutive Primera Division victory before suffering an injury in the summer. The Catalans achieved history by winning all 30 league games during the 2021-22 season.

She also guided Barcelona to victories in the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa de la Reina, completing a domestic treble despite falling short in the Champions League.

Putellas’ goal in the final was not enough to prevent Lyon from defeating Barcelona 3-1 in Turin.
