Former world number one Andy Murray beat Canadian fourteenth seed Denis Shapovalov 6-1 3-6 6-2 to arrive at the Madrid Open last 16.

Andy Murray next meets current world number one Novak Djokovic for a spot in the quarters in the pair’s 37th clash and first since 2017.

Djokovic, who prior facilitated past Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-3 6-2, drives their contention 25-11, with their last seven matches coming in finals.

Carlos Alcaraz additionally advanced to the last 16 after the Spanish seventh seed beat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 7-5.

In first round action, Sebastian Korda expelled individual American and fifteenth seed Reilly Opelka 6-3 7-5, while Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp saved a match point in the subsequent set prior to proceeding to beat Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7(6) 7-6(1) 6-3.
