Australia skipper Aaron Finch scored a brilliant 63 off 44 deliveries against Ireland to return in form and keep their T20 World Cup campaign alive but hamstring injuries to him and two other players are a cause of concern for the defending T20 world champions.

A commanding 42-run win also saw multiple injuries including one to Aaron Finch after the captain had put in a match-winning hand at the Gabba.

Finch, batted well till 16.5 overs before he was dismissed and came to the field for the start of the second innings to defend the total. However, he soon left the field in discomfort pulling up his hamstring after a sprint.

Wicket-keeper Matthew Wade was handed the captaincy as Australia finished their innings with three different substitute fielders. The three players from Australia to leave the field were Finch (right hamstring spasm), Tim David (left hamstring spasm) and Marcus Stoinis (unknown).

The hamstring issue to Finch is of the most worry for Australia given the 35-year-old’s history of hamstring injuries. He is supposed to undergo scans on Tuesday to reveal the extent of the injury.

“Really a hammy twinge I think, I will get a scan tomorrow, I have a history of them. It doesn’t look bad at the moment but let’s see how it goes after the scan,” said Finch during the post-match presentation.

“We’ll get a scan and get the full results, but I am very hopeful (of playing against Afghanistan) but we’ll know more (Tuesday).”

With this win against Ireland, Australia pushed their net run rate up to -0.304, still below that of England, but they moved to the second spot in Group 1 standings with five points in four matches. On the other hand, Ireland are in fourth spot with three points.
