Daniil Medvedev sent off his bid for a maiden Australian Open title on Tuesday with a 6-1 6-4 7-6(3) cavort over Swiss battler Henri Laaksonen.
U.S. Open hero Medvedev, top choice to succeed at Melbourne Park directly following Novak Djokovic’s extradition, was in journey control for two sets against world number 91 Laaksonen prior to being hauled into a canine battle in the third set.
Laaksonen delivered glimmering tennis to stay in contact with Medvedev in the tiebreak prior to wavering with a couple of unforced errors that gave the Russian three match points.
Medvedev fixed the success on the first of them and will play the victor of Nick Kyrgios and Liam Broady for a spot in the third round.
