After winning the Women’s European Championship on Sunday, England coach Sarina Wiegman’s press conference was disrupted by her jubilant players, who danced into the room singing a rendition of the “Three Lionesses” anthem.

When the players unexpectedly appeared, goalkeeper Mary Earps leaped atop the table and was soon joined by defender Lucy Bronze, Wiegman had just finished responding to a query regarding tactics and how games were won and lost.

“We haven’t sung this at all, this is something from English culture,” Dutchwoman Wiegman told reporters after the interruption.

“I think we won the Cup. I don’t think this is the home of the Cup, that’s in Switzerland somewhere with UEFA but we won it and we’re really happy.”

The comedy duo David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, along with the band The Lightning Seeds, wrote the song “Three Lions” originally for the men’s Euro ’96 competition that England hosted. It has since been revised for the women’s squad.

Baddiel retweeted a clip of the England players’ celebrations, writing: “This makes me very proud. Thanks again Lionesses.”
