The Football Association (FA) announced on Monday that the England women’s team will wear blue shorts instead of white, after players raised concerns about playing in white during their menstrual cycle.
The reason for the switch was not provided in the FA’s media release, but England forward Beth Mead had stated last year that the team had spoken to official kit manufacturer Nike about the possibility of a change, as white shorts were “not practical when it’s the time of the month.”
England’s new blue shorts will be worn for both their home and away kits for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Australia, as well as at the Women’s World Cup, to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
Other women’s teams, such as Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion, have also switched to navy and burgundy shorts, respectively, while the Ireland women’s rugby team announced a change to navy blue shorts last month.
Wimbledon tennis championships also addressed the issue of women athletes wearing white clothing, allowing female players to wear dark coloured undershorts to alleviate the anxiety of wearing white during their menstrual cycle.
