Star Australian batter and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell blasted mid-match; nightclub-style light shows at the Cricket World Cup as “the dumbest idea” on Wednesday, claiming they cause “shocking headaches”.
The big show Glenn Maxwell struck the fastest World Cup century in just 40 deliveries against the Netherlands to lead Australia to a tournament record 309-run win over the Dutch at Arun Jaitley stadium, New Delhi.
During the tournament there is a light show for the fans during the mid-innings break, in all the venues hosting a World Cup match. But the show didn’t amuse Maxwell, he covered his eyes with both hands during the nearly two-minute spectacle.
He said, “Well, I had something like that light show happen at the Perth stadium during a Big Bash game, “and I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust and I think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers.
He also said, it’s a great idea for the fans but it’s horrible for the players.
David Warner the Australian opener and Maxwell’s teammate said he loved the light show and the atmosphere. And he also thanked the fans who came in large numbers.
Two different perspectives by the same teammates kept the experts and the fans guessing whose perspective was correct.
