Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon hopes were squashed on Center Court by France’s Caroline Garcia as the she experienced a 6-3 6-3 second-round loss on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old, who soared to notoriety with her entrancing U.S. Open victory last year, didn’t play seriously yet had no solution to Garcia’s predominant capability.
Garcia with three grasscourt titles overwhelmed the first set as her forceful return game and weighty serving disrupted the tenth seeded Raducanu.
She kept bursting endlessly in the second set as Raducanu, in spite of sectarian help, fell away.
Raducanu gave her fans an expectation of a comeback when she broke Garcia to even out the set at 3-3, yet she dropped serve promptly to hand the benefit back.
Garcia held for 5-3 and broke the Briton again to guarantee a win, polishing it off with a crosscourt strike.
Her initial success over precarious Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck had raised assumptions, however Garcia, an undeniably more risky rival, offered an obvious rude awakening.
“I was preparing for this match really well,” Garcia said.
“Emma is a huge player and in her home tournament and she proved she can do very well on the big stage. It’s fair that they support Emma and of course it a great memory for me and as always it is a lot of respect.”
