New Zealand secured their second victory in the 2023 World Cup by defeating the Netherlands with a convincing 99-run win. They currently sit at the top of the table, thanks to their impressive run rate, which has been boosted by two successful wins with significant margins.
Opting to bowl first, the Dutch bowled three maiden overs but struggled to make an early breakthrough. New Zealand’s top five batters all got off to good starts, with three of them reaching half-centuries.
Will Young played a notable innings, scoring 70 runs, while Rachin Ravindra notched up another fifty. Skipper Tom Latham also contributed with a half-century, ensuring the team posted a competitive total.
The Dutch team threatened to limit their opponents to a score below 300 as they picked up two quick wickets towards the end of the innings. However, Mitchell Santner had other plans. He displayed his hitting skills in an excellent cameo, scoring 36 runs off just 17 balls. New Zealand set a target of 323 runs for the Netherlands.
In their chase of the formidable total, the Dutch batters made good starts, but only Colin Ackerman managed to reach a fifty. He formed a 50-run partnership with Teja Nidamanuru, but unfortunately, a mix-up between them resulted in Teja being run out, breaking the partnership.
Ackerman was later joined by skipper Scott Edwards, and both batters kept the scoreboard ticking. Mitchell Santner, despite conceding 36 runs off his first five overs, came back stronger, picking up two crucial wickets. The left-arm spinner ultimately took a five-wicket haul, playing a pivotal role in New Zealand’s victory. Matt Henry contributed with three wickets as well. The Kiwis defeated the Netherlands by 99 runs, securing their second consecutive win in the tournament.
