The Indian women’s football team managed to score a goal against Brazil, however eventually it was defeated by a score of 1-6 in its first match of the four-nation international tournament at Manaus, Brazil on Friday.
Manisha Kalyan levelled for India in the eighth minute, after Debora Oliveira had placed the 2007 World Cup runners-up ahead in the first minute.
However, in the 36th minute Giovana Costa put Brazil in the lead and gave the team a sigh of relief.
Brazil later on scored four more goals in the second half through Ariadina Borges (52nd), Kerolin Ferraz (54th), Geyse Ferreira (76th) and Ariadina Borges (81st) to win the match with a tennis-like scoreline.
After 26 years and 205 games for Brazil, renowned midfielder Formiga announced her international retirement at the age of 43. She competed in seven Olympic Games.
Formiga was also a part of he 2007 World Cup silver medal winning Brazil team. She came on as a late substitution in Friday’s encounter at Arena da Amazonia, with only 15 minutes remaining.
India will be facing Chile on 29th November and Venezuela on 2nd December.
