Defending champion Real Madrid will face Liverpool in the Champions League last 16 – a rematch of last season’s final – while Paris St Germain will face German champions Bayern Munich.
In May, Madrid defeated Liverpool in a tense final thanks to a Vinicius Junior goal.
The pair were drawn from the hat in Monday’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland, after meeting in the 2017-18 final, which the Spanish team also won.
Real have won five and drawn one of their last six Champions League games against Liverpool, winning the two finals and progressing in their only knockout-stage tie, 3-1 and 0-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2020-21 season.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, both pre-tournament favourites, will not go all the way, as the two teams meet next in what could be veteran PSG forward Lionel Messi’s final chance to add to his four titles with Barcelona.
Despite winning their groups, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have been given difficult assignments, facing Serie A champions AC Milan and Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund, respectively.
Manchester City, the Premier League champions who went unbeaten in the group stages as they chase their first European Cup title, will face RB Leipzig of Germany.
The next round of this season’s competition will be held in March, with the first legs taking place on February 14-15 and February 21-22, and the return fixtures on March 7-8 and March 14-15.
Draw in full:
