Neeraj Chopra made a fabulous return to competition after his historic gold in the Tokyo Olympics, a spectacular throw of 89.30m breaking his national record and putting him second in an elegant field at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Chopra’s first competitive event after just over 10 months was out and out phenomenal as he almost touched 90m mark, considered the gold standard in the world of javelin throw.
Chopra’s prior national record was 88.07m which he had set in Patiala in March the year before. He had won the Tokyo Olympics gold with a throw of 87.58m on August 7, 2021.
He started with a great 86.92m prior to sending the javelin to 89.30m. His next three attempts were messes while he concocted 85.85m in his 6th and last throw.
Finland’s 25-year-old Oliver Helander, who has an individual best of 88.02m and season’s best of 80.36m, was the gold winner with a best throw of 89.83m which he created in his second attempt.
Chopra’s 89.30m exertion will take him to fifth spot in the world season leaders’ list.
