P.T. Usha Meets Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha met Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare on the sidelines of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
The meeting focused on India’s preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. It also covered the future of the Commonwealth Sport movement and stronger international sporting cooperation.
Usha described the discussion as warm and productive. Both sides also discussed the broader roadmap for Commonwealth Sport.
P.T. Usha and India’s Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games
The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad (Ahmedabad) will be a historic edition. The Games will mark 100 years of the event, which began in 1930.
Amdavad (Ahmedabad), Gujarat, was formally confirmed as the host city for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in November 2025. Commonwealth Sport confirmed the decision at its General Assembly in Glasgow.
Meanwhile, India continues preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The country is also working to strengthen its cooperation with Commonwealth Sport.
P.T. Usha Recalls India’s Commonwealth Games Journey
Usha also recalled India’s Commonwealth Games journey and its campaign in Glasgow during the meeting.
India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. Therefore, Amdavad 2030 will be the country’s second opportunity to host the event.
The Amdavad edition will also carry added significance. It will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, which began in 1930.
Commonwealth Sport’s Future and P.T. Usha’s Discussions
The meeting between P.T. Usha and Donald Rukare also focused on the future of the Commonwealth Sport movement.
In addition, both sides discussed the broader roadmap for Commonwealth Sport. They also discussed India’s preparations for the Centenary Commonwealth Games.
At the same time, India continues preparations for Amdavad 2030. The event will mark an important milestone for Indian sport and the Commonwealth Games movement.
Planning for Amdavad 2030 Already Underway
Preparatory work for Amdavad 2030 has already included engagement between Commonwealth Sport and Indian stakeholders. In April 2026, a senior Commonwealth Sport delegation visited India for discussions related to the Games.
The delegation was led by President Dr Donald Rukare and Chief Executive Katie Sadleir. During the visit, they held meetings in Gujarat and New Delhi.
The delegation also visited sporting venues. These included Narendra Modi Stadium, Mahatma Mandir and Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.
The discussions also covered existing infrastructure. Technical teams looked at how it could be used, adapted and connected as part of the Games planning.
Furthermore, the visit highlighted the importance of coordination between Commonwealth Sport, the Indian Olympic Association, national authorities and partners in Gujarat. This cooperation will continue as preparations for the 2030 Games move forward.
Finally, Commonwealth Sport confirmed in November 2025 that 15 to 17 sports will feature at Amdavad 2030. The Amdavad 2030 team will work with Commonwealth Sport and international federations to shape the sports programme. The full Centenary Games line-up will be announced later.
