Mumbai middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan has been ruled out of the Irani Cup to be played from March 1-5 at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior due to a finger injury.

25-year-old Sarfaraz, who has been a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket for the last three seasons, has sustained a hairline fracture on his left little finger while playing in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Mumbai.

It has been learnt that Sarfaraz has been advised eight to ten days of rest for his injury and he is currently recovering from his injury at a fitness camp organised by Delhi Capitals in Kolkata.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee comprising Shiv Sunder Das, Sridharan Sharath, Salil Ankola and Subroto Bannerjee has named Baba Indrajith as Sarfaraz’s replacement.

Mayank Agarwal, who was the highest run-getter in the recently-concluded Ranji Trophy season, is named the captain of the Rest of India squad in the Irani Cup game against Madhya Pradesh starting on March 1 in Gwalior.

Earlier, the match was set to be played at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. However, it had to be shifted to Gwalior after the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia Test was shifted from Dharamshala to Indore.

The third Test between India and Australia is also set to start on March 1 in Indore. The Irani Cup game between the Rest of India and Madhya Pradesh will be the first first-class game in Gwalior in more than six years.

Madhya Pradesh, who won the Ranji Trophy title in the 2021-22 season, were initially expected to play their Irani Cup game at the start of the 2022-23 season. However, the match was later allotted to Saurashtra, who won the title in 2019-20, as they were denied hosting the Irani Cup because of the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rest of India squad: Mayank Agarwal (Captain), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yash Dhull, Baba Indrajith, Upendra Yadav (WK), Atit Sheth, Saurabh Kumar, Harvik Desai, Navdeep Saini, Mukesh Kumar, Chetan Sakariya, Akash Deep, Mayank Markande, Pulkit Narang, Sudip Kumar Gharami
