Deepak Chahar has been ruled out due to an injury and will be replaced by all-rounder Shardul Thakur as a reserve player in the India squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia beginning on October 16.

Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami will now travel to Australia to join India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, and Deepak Chahar, who were announced as the three original reserves, are not traveling at the moment.

The 30-year-old Chahar was named as part of the reserves for the T20 World Cup along with Shami, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi.

However, the BCCI is yet to announce the 15th man in the squad who will be a replacement for the injured Jasprit Bumrah.

The report further said the replacement will be announced after the team management makes a final assessment of their form in Australia before the T20 World Cup. Bumrah was ruled out of the competition because of a stress fracture in his back.

32-year-old Mohammed Shami played his last T20I match in the 2021 T20 World Cup in November last year and will be returning to the side following an extended break due to COVID-19. Shami has been training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru following his prolonged bout with COVID-19, which forced him out of the limited-overs series against Australia and South Africa.

On the other hand, Siraj’s form has been impressive in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa, which India won 2-1. He took two wickets in the series decider in New Delhi on Tuesday as the host won the match by seven wickets. He was named ‘Player of the Series’ in the three-match ODI fixture with five wickets.

Chahar was recently ruled out of the ODI series against South Africa due to a stiff back, but he has been in sublime form ever since he returned from a long injury lay-off during the series against Zimbabwe in Harare after missing the entire Indian Premier League 2022 season.

Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur will join India’s T20I squad in Perth, where they are currently preparing for the mega event.

India will play their next practise game in Perth on Thursday, following which they are due to travel to Brisbane, where they will play two official World Cup warm-up matches, against Australia and New Zealand, on October 17 and 19 respectively.

The squad will then travel to Melbourne to play their tournament opener against Pakistan on October 23. India is in Group 2 of the Super 12, along with Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, and two qualifiers from the first round.

India’s T20 World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh.
