Vinesh Phogat, who was visibly upset, claimed on Wednesday that Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had been sexually abusing wrestlers for many years. He asked the Prime Minister and Home Minister to intervene to have him removed.
A world championship medalist and Olympian named Vinesh also asserted that several coaches at the national camp in Lucknow had taken advantage of female wrestlers, and she added that a few of the camp’s female staff members approached wrestlers on the WFI President’s orders.
Though the 28-year-old was clear that she had not personally experienced such exploitation, she claimed that WFI President officials had ordered people close to him to threaten her with death after she dared to speak out against the organization’s president.
“Few coaches in national camps sexually harass female wrestlers and female coaches. I have protested several times but the sexual offenders keep getting included in national camps by the Wrestling Federation Of India,” said Vinesh Phogat.
“We are being tortured. We are forced to beg the officials to allow us into national camps. Young wrestlers are forced to pay money to the officials to pursue Wrestling.”
‘Coaches are put into national camps just to earn promotion in departments without actual experience.
We did not have a proper physio or coach during the Tokyo Olympics,” she added.
