It was a dominant day of Test cricket for the Indian team, particularly due to Ravichandran Ashwin’s outstanding performance with the ball, where he took impressive figures of 7/71, his best in an overseas Test innings. Additionally, debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal played a magnificent innings, scoring 171 runs.

As a result of their dominant performance with both bat and ball, Team India convincingly defeated West Indies by an innings and 141 runs, winning the first Test match on Day 3 at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. Speaking about the day’s events, young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal narrowly missed a double century on his debut as he was dismissed for 171. Both Yashasvi and Virat Kohli played elegant innings and built a partnership of 100 runs. Kohli scored 76 off 182 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 37 off 82 deliveries.

With India reaching a total of 421/5, captain Rohit Sharma decided to declare the innings. Trailing by 271 runs, the West Indies batting lineup struggled against the skilful spin bowling of Ashwin. After being excluded from the WTC Final, Ashwin made a strong comeback in this Test match and didn’t disappoint the fans. The 36-year-old off-spinner ended the game with impressive bowling figures of 12/131, which also happened to be his best performance in an away Test.

The West Indies openers, Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored just seven runs, while Raymon Reifer and Jermaine Blackwood accumulated 11 and five runs respectively. Alick Athanaze showed promise again as he was the top scorer for his side, contributing 28 runs off 44 balls. It was an easy victory for Team India as the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja (2/28) quickly wrapped up the innings, dismissing the home side for 130 runs.

With this win, the visitors took a 1-0 lead, and the second Test match is scheduled to be played at Port of Spain in Trinidad from the 20th of July. This upcoming Test match will be a historic occasion, marking the 100th Test match between West Indies and India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding knock of 171 runs on his debut.
