Goa is all set to host the 37th edition of the National Games 2023. The event, which experienced multiple delays and changes in hosting arrangements, is now fixed to run from October 26 to November 9. This significant occasion represents the first time Goa has been chosen to host this prestigious competition.
The National Games serve as India’s indigenous multi-sport event, akin to the Olympic Games, where athletes from different states and Union Territories vie for medals.
Numerous well-known Indian athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, Sania Mirza, Mirabai Chanu, Sajan Prakash, and Manu Bhaker, have taken part in the National Games over the years.
This year’s National Games is set to feature a record-breaking 43 sports, encompassing both Olympic disciplines and indigenous games. In the previous edition, held last year, more than 7,000 athletes participated in 36 sports. Notably, Kho Kho, yogasana, and mallakhamb made their debut at the National Games.
The 2023 National Games will introduce several new sports, such as beach football, roll ball, golf, sepaktakraw, sqay martial arts, kalliyarapattu, and pencak silat. Additionally, yachting and taekwondo are making a comeback after being excluded in the last edition. Traditional sports like lagori and gatka have been included as demonstration sports, adding to the diverse and vibrant sporting experience of the event.
The International Institute of Sports & Management (IISM) has played a pivotal role in the extensive organization of the National Games. More than a hundred dedicated sports management professionals from IISM, including both current students and alumni, are actively involved in various crucial aspects of the event. These responsibilities span across different departments such as accreditation, overlays, GMS, strategic knowledge partner teams, ACT, venue coordination, and volunteer management, among others.
IISM, situated in Mumbai, stands as a leading educational institution specializing in sports management and sports science education. Its official designation for the Goa National Games is that of the “Strategic Knowledge and Training Partner.”
Beyond its involvement in this specific event, the institute’s impact resonates widely due to its commitment to nurturing sports management expertise. This expertise is fundamental to the success of large-scale competitions like the National Games, showcasing the institution’s dedication to the overall development of the sports industry.
Over 10,000 athletes are expected to participate at the National Games 2023.
The 37th National Games in Goa not only demonstrate India’s sporting excellence but also serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing emerging talents in the country’s sports arena.
