England, the defending champions, secured their first victory in the 2023 ODI World Cup by defeating Bangladesh with a convincing margin of 137 runs. England’s campaign didn’t start well, with a loss to the Kiwis in their first match. However, they bounced back with a strong performance against Bangladesh.
During the match, Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, won the toss and chose to field, giving England the opportunity to bat first. England’s batters made the most of this chance, posting a formidable total of 365 runs. Dawid Malan played a remarkable innings, scoring 140 runs from just 107 balls. He received valuable support from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, both of whom contributed with fifties, helping England reach a final score of 364-9 after 50 overs.
In the bowling department, Mahedi Hasan was the standout performer for Bangladesh, taking four wickets, while left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam claimed three wickets. Although the Bangladeshi bowlers were a bit expensive, their efforts limited England from reaching the 400-run mark.
Facing the daunting task of chasing a massive target, Bangladesh lost four wickets before the first powerplay, increasing the pressure on their remaining batsmen. Liton Das played a crucial role, scoring quickly, and was later joined by Mushfiqur Rahim, both of whom reached half-centuries.
The partnership was broken when Chris Woakes dismissed Liton Das, and Reece Topley emerged as England’s key wicket-taker, grabbing four important wickets, including Mushfiqur Rahim. Towards the end, Mark Wood and Sam Curran took care of the lower-order batters, ultimately bowling out Bangladesh for 227 runs, securing a comfortable 137-run victory for England.
