Virat Kohli surpassed former Sri Lanka cricketer Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-scorer in the history of the men’s T20 World Cup after playing a match-winning inning in a Super 12 game against Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup in Adelaide Oval, on Wednesday.
Kohli went past Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene’s record tally of 1016 runs in the seventh over of India’s innings. After scoring a brilliant 64 not out off 44 balls with eight fours and one six, Kohli now has 1065 runs with an average of 88.75 and a strike rate of more than 132.46 in T20 World Cups.
Playing in his fifth T20 World Cup, the 33-year-old Kohli became the competition’s highest-leading run-getter with 12 half-centuries. On the other hand, Jayawardene set his record in his 31st innings, though he faced fewer balls (754 balls) than Kohli did (773).

After Kohli and Jayawardene, Chris Gayle (965), Rohit Sharma (921) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (897) are at the third, fourth and fifth spots on the list of all-time run-scorers in the T20 World Cup history.
Kohli scored 185 runs in his first T20 World Cup in 2012; he was the competition’s top-scorer with 319 runs from six games in 2014; and the second-highest run-getter with 273 runs from five games in 2016. He is the only male cricketer to get the Player of the Tournament award twice which he achieved in the 2014 and 2016 editions. He also has six Player-of-the-Match awards which are the most in the tournament’s history.
Kohli started the 2022 T20 World Cup on 845 runs and scored two consecutive unbeaten half-centuries with his 82 (53)* against Pakistan and 62 (44)* against the Netherlands before being dismissed for 12 against South Africa. Kohli became the second player after Jayawardene to complete 1000 runs in the history of T20 World Cups in his previous game against South Africa.
Kohli now has 1065 runs from 25 games with an average of 88.75 and a strike rate of 132.46 in the history of the T20 World Cups. He has 13 half-centuries in the tournament which is the most by a player and is ahead of Rohit Sharma/Chris Gayle (9), Mahela Jayawardene (7) and David Warner (6).
The former India captain is also the highest run-scorer in all T20 internationals with 3932 runs from 113 matches and is ahead of his team-mate Rohit Sharma (3811 runs), Martin Guptill (3531 runs), Babar Azam (3239 runs) and Paul Stirling (3144 runs) on the top 5 run-scorer list. He is slowly approaching the 4000 run milestone in T20Is, and averages 53.13 with a strike rate of 138.45.
Kohli’s brilliant knock of 64 not out off 44 deliveries helped India beat Bangladesh by 5 runs on the DLS method as they now become the Group 2 toppers with six points from four games and move a step closer to booking a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
