Ashes 2023: Australia extends series lead with a resounding 43-run win on day 5

Australia had a sensational day of Test cricket, clinching a commanding 2-0 lead in the series and emerging victorious. Despite the outstanding display by England’s captain, Ben Stokes, his team fell short of their target.

In the second innings, Ben Duckett once again played a vital role, forging a valuable partnership alongside skipper Ben Stokes. However, Duckett’s innings came to an end when he was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood, who bowled a well-executed bouncer. The catch was brilliantly taken by Alex Carey with a one-handed effort. Duckett contributed 83 runs in the second innings and an impressive 98 runs in the first innings.

After Duckett’s dismissal, England’s skipper Ben Stokes was joined by Jonny Bairstow. Unfortunately, Bairstow, the last remaining specialist batsman, fell in an unusual manner, scoring only 10 runs. While ducking a bouncer from Cameron Green, Bairstow mistakenly strayed from his crease.

Alert wicketkeeper Alex Carey swiftly threw the ball to the stumps, resulting in Bairstow being run out. Bairstow believed he had grounded his bat behind the crease, but the third umpire, Marais Erasmus, adjudged him out, sparking disappointment among some English fans, who booed the Australian players.

MStokes displayed an unwavering determination to win the match at any cost. It seemed as though he was on the brink of recreating his heroic performance from the Headingly Test during the 2019 Ashes. He single-handedly kept the scoreboard ticking and played a magnificent inning of 155 runs, which included nine boundaries and nine sixes. Every English fan was hoping for a match-winning knock from Stokes, but his dismissal at the hands of Josh Hazlewood shattered their hopes.

Following Stokes’ dismissal, England’s batting line-up faced further setbacks, leading to Australia’s triumph with a margin of 43 runs. Australian captain Pat Cummins played a pivotal role in the second innings, leading the bowling attack and securing figures of 3-69. With this win, Australia has gained a significant advantage in the series.

To reclaim the Ashes, England will now have to win three consecutive Tests, which presents a challenging task. On the other hand, Australia only needs to win one more Test to retain the prestigious trophy. Both teams will be aiming to seize the upcoming matches to shape the outcome of the series.
