The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, on Friday. The tournament will be played in a two-month window from March 31 to May 28 in India.
The 16th edition of the IPL will return to its traditional home and away format in India for the first time since 2019. The tournament’s previous edition was hosted across three cities – Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. In the upcoming edition, all the teams will play 7 home games and 7 away games respectively in the league stage.
The IPL 2023 season is set to start on 31st March 2023, just five days after the final of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) on March 26. The first match of the season will be played between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
All ten teams will be in action at the tournament’s opening weekend with two double-headers scheduled on both days of the weekend. A total of 70 league-stage matches will be played across 12 venues over the course of 52 days.
The 10 teams have been divided into two groups like last season. Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are in Group A, while Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are in Group B.
Each team will play against the five teams of the opposite group twice, making it 10 matches and the other four teams from their own group once, making it a total of 14 league games per team.
The IPL 2023 will have 18 double-headers, with the day games starting at 3:30 PM IST and the evening games starting at 07:30 PM IST.
The first double-header day of the season will be played on 1st April 2023 between the Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali in the afternoon, while Lucknow Super Giants will clash against the Delhi Capitals in the evening game in Lucknow.
Rajasthan Royals will play their first couple of home games in Guwahati before playing the remaining of their home games in Jaipur. On the other hand, Punjab Kings will play their five home matches in Mohali, following which they play their last two home matches in Dharamshala against Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals respectively.
The schedule and venues for the Playoffs and Final will be announced later. The IPL 2023 final will be played on May 28, 2023.
