In the first three days of the first Test on Saturday, India crushed Australia by an innings and 132 runs thanks in large part to the five wickets taken by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
In order to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series, the hosts in Nagpur grabbed a dominant 223-run lead after the first innings and bowled out Australia for 91 in the second session.
“You know how things work from the third day onwards here in Test matches. I’d credit the batting unit, they really dug deep and kept them on the field for a long while. It’s going to be tough for the team coming out and bat,” said Ravichandran Ashwin.
India posted 400 against Australia on the third day of the first Test here on Saturday, taking a commanding 223-run first innings lead thanks to Axar Patel’s sturdy 84 and Mohammed Shami’s entertaining 37.
In the 52-run ninth-wicket stand, which helped India defeat Australia on a pitch that the visiting media said was “doctored,” Axar kept his head down and let Shami bat.
With Ravindra Jadeja (70) and Patel at the crease, India had started the day at 321 for 7. Jadeja did not endure for long as he raised his arms in response to a Murphy delivery that slammed into the stumps from an oblique angle.
