Dinesh Karthik, India’s senior wicketkeeper, will be a doubtful starter against Bangladesh on Wednesday due to back spasms that caused him to leave the field during the final five overs of the South Africa game.
Rishabh Pant’s insertion into the playing XI could be facilitated by Karthik’s injury.
After Karthik was forced to leave the field due to injury, Pant kept wickets from the 16th over to the finish of the game against South Africa on Sunday.
The fundamental cause could be excessively low temperatures, which can produce these types of niggles.
“Karthik felt pain in his lower back. We haven’t heard about the severity of his back spasm. The medical team is working to get him fit as heat treatment and massaging helps reduce the discomfort, quickly. So don’t rule him out yet,” a senior BCCI official privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Karthik has had a disappointing campaign, scoring 1 against Pakistan and 6 off 15 balls against South Africa.
He is a designated finisher, but his inability to cope with the pace and bounce on offer at Perth’s Optus Stadium with little support for Suryakumar Yadav in their 52-run stand drew some criticism.
The Indian coaching staff has also come under fire for leaving a counter-attacking player like Pant out of the lineup.
Pant has had tremendous success in Test matches in Australia. In comparison to Karthik, he is a superior player of horizontal bat shots.
